Get the Most Out of Your First Raw Reformer Class: Tips, Form & Mindset

Trying something new can feel a little daunting, especially when it comes to fitness. Raw Reformer combines strength, mobility, and control in a way that challenges both body and mind. Whether you’re stepping into the studio for the very first time or simply curious about what to expect, this guide will help you feel prepared and ready to make the most of your first Raw Reformer experience.

What Is Raw Reformer?

Raw Reformer is our unique, energised approach to traditional Pilates reformer training. Using the reformer machine (a sliding carriage with resistance springs) we’ve designed classes that are accessible to all fitness levels. Think of it as Pilates with an edge: low-impact, but high on intensity, precision, and results.

1. Arrive Early & Get Comfortable

Arriving 10–15 minutes before class is key. This gives you time to meet the instructor, get set up on the reformer bed, and learn the basic controls like adjusting foot straps, springs, and carriage. Feeling confident with the equipment from the start will let you focus on moving well once the class begins.

2. Focus on Form Over Speed

It’s easy to look around and try to match what everyone else is doing, but Raw Reformer is about control. Movements are slower and more precise than you might expect from a HIIT or strength class. Concentrate on your alignment, breathing, and muscle engagement. The quality of each rep will deliver better results than rushing through.

3. Listen to Your Instructor

Our instructors are there to guide you, cue your breathing, and make adjustments if needed. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, they’ll happily help you find the right spring resistance or modify an exercise. Think of the class as personalised coaching in a group setting.

4. Expect a Full-Body Burn

Raw Reformer looks calm and controlled, but don’t be fooled you’ll feel muscles working you didn’t even know you had. The springs add resistance in both directions, meaning you’ll challenge stabilising muscles as well as the larger movers. Be prepared for that satisfying burn in your core, glutes, and shoulders.

5. Bring the Right Mindset

Approach your first class with curiosity rather than pressure. Everyone in the room started as a beginner once. If you can stay open, patient, and consistent, you’ll quickly find your flow. Most members say they notice improvements in posture, strength, and flexibility within just a few sessions.

Time to Get Started

Your first Raw Reformer class is about learning the ropes, connecting with your body, and enjoying the process. With the right mindset and a focus on form, you’ll leave feeling taller, stronger, and energised. Like anything at Raw Gyms, it’s about progress, not perfection and each session builds towards a healthier, more powerful you.
